The very best dressed of the week… Celine Dion, Janelle Monae and more!

best dressed celine dion sarah paulson rihanna oscars

Award season has basically taken over every news, celebrity and fashion site recently. The Oscars (and the massive blunder) dominated last week’s headlines, and the Vanity Fair after party (personally I prefer this red carpet than the main event) got lots of column inches too. Like Sarah Paulson (above, middle) who chose this amazing illusion dress by Ronald van der Kemp. The contrast of the mustard and the black is mesmerising – I can’t stop looking at her here! And the ruffled sleeve adds just enough flounce.

But there was a couple of other surprises too… actually it’s no surprise that Celine Dion tops the best dressed list again. With her new stylist in tow – Law Roach (@luxurylaw) – she can literally do no wrong. He has literally transformed this Diva’s wardrobe. Here she wears this powder blue bow-detail Christian Siriano gown to the Beauty and the Beast premiere. I’m still open mouthed about this look… her best EVER red carpet dress me thinks!

And what about Rihanna in this head-to-toe Monse look? She wore this to pick up her Humanitarian Of The Year award from Harvard (wtf?), and while I’ve seen a lot of polarised opinions about it, I think it’s oh-so-gorgeous on her! The fold over neckline, the belt, the slit, the matching boots… it’s all so amazing!

And I can’t not mention Janelle Monae from the Oscars and beyond…

janelle monae oscars elie saab best dressed

These were her two standout looks from the night. Left, at the awards, wearing Elie Saab couture: the most epic gown she has worn. It looks like her stylist, the amazing Maeve Reilly (@stylememaeve), has put extra padding on the hips, because on the model it didn’t look this wide. But it’s the embellishments and sheer and belt and general fabulousness that makes this so iconic. And going with the full gown theme, she wore this Alexandre Vauthier couture dress to the Vanity Fair party. Another EPIC choice!

janelle monae black and white chanel

The singer-turned-actress is famous for only wearing a monochrome palette, although she has broken away from the black and white mould of late adding yellow – this Barbara Bui trouser suit is so very chic on her – and gold – this Chanel couture sequinned jacket dress. But it was this mash up of stripes and geometric patterns, all by Ferragamo, that left me wanting more from her monochrome love affair. Just so striking!

Let’s see what the rising star will do next!

Kate Beckinsale’s PERFECT red carpet wardrobe…

We only see her on the most covetable red carpets, but when she pulls on her glad rags, she really turns it out. Kate Beckinsale has one amazing red carpet, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever not liked a dress she’s been seen papped in. She has it down to an art form.

With award season over, we’ve all had time to digest, critique, praise, lament or bitch over the red carpets and the dresses that come with them. Kate’s a leader, she’s a dark horse in the A list pack.

Here’s a little run down of her red carpet style: from thigh-high slits, epic drama, some essential Vivienne Westwood, even a jumpsuit and some high glamour, if you ever wanted any gown advice, look to Kate!

Vanity Fair Party 2013 Best Dressed… MY GOODNESS there’s lots!

Oh my God, never mind the Oscars red carpet, the Vanity Fair after party saw some of the best dresses of the season/year/century. From Giambattista Valli to Stephane Rolland couture (YAY), finally some of the dresses I’ve been DYING to see on a red carpet are shown off in all their glory.

Actually a bit speechless right now, these dresses. THESE DRESSES…

 ***Kate Beckinsale in Monique Lhuillier***
I have to start with Kate because she is my ultimate girl crush. This is why I love award season, Kate comes out, all dressed up, looking like this. The rest of the year, she’s grocery shopping. What a STUNNING dress. And straight from Lhuillier’s most recent autumn/winter 2013 collection too. That means something. It means she’s CHIC.

***The Bingbings – Fan and Li***
I thought Fan had excited us enough with her pink Marchesa dress from the Oscars, obviously not. This monochrome Oscar de la Renta gown is AH-MA-ZING. And friend (no relation apparently) Li, Gucci’s brand ambassador, totally owned this turquoise trouser suit from the spring 2013 collection. What a pair!
***Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein***
See, her Oscars dress was a bit predictable for me. However, this sparkler was so unexpected! It’s youthful, dramatic and GORGEOUS. She should have chosen this for the Oscars.
***Karolina Kurkova in Atelier Versace***
Yes, she’s a model, and yes, the dress looks almost the same as it did on the catwalk, but it’s still so nice to see it out and about, on a red carpet. Love the playfulness of it, look at that smile, it says it all!
***Anne Hathaway in Saint Laurent***
THIS should have been her Oscars dress. THIS IS THE ONE. It’s still a very her aesthetic (i.e. a tad safe), but a million times better than nipple-gate Prada. Apparently Anne decided to wear the Prada dress three hours before her appearance on the red carpet. This should have been the one she changed too.

 ***Kristen Chenoweth in Giorgio Armani***
She’s a little red carpet dynamo, and in this uber romantic dress, she looks the best she has done for a long time. Not that she ever looks bad, but she did choose a rather spangly dress for the Oscars. This one is miles better if you ask me!

***Diane Kruger in Giambattista Valli couture***
Another dress I was dying to see on the red carpet, thank you Diane. It’s got a really gorgeous cape back, that you can just about make out here. I love love love this shape. She looks tres chic.

***Irina Shayk in Stephane Rolland couture***
Irina who? It doesn’t matter who she is (Russian model), it’s this dress that matters. THIS DRESS! You may know that Stephane Rolland is one of my all time favourite designers, thank GOD someone wore one of his amazing designs this award season. JUST PURE WOW.

***Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Andrew Gn***
I’m in LOVE with this dress. It’s not sparkly or glitzy, so I know it’s a surprise I love it so much, but the monochrome, the pockets and this new shape – a big, bell, full skirt – is really ticking all the boxes for me. Well done Mary, you look stunning.

***Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta***
Oooo she’s done well, our Amy.  What a corker… floor length, fringed, perfection.

***Naomi Watts in Emilio Pucci***
From a gorgeous sci-fi-ish Armani Prive gown, to this contouring, black and gold goddess gown, Naomi is my new one to watch. WOW.

***Jane Fonda in Reem Acra***
One last one, and to finish on Jane Fonda leaves me smiling. Another FAB dress from the 75-year-old. Age appropriate, sexy and shows off that amazing body. She’s at the top of the red carpet game!

Halle Berry at the Oscars 2013 – Best Dressed #3

After the shocker that was Halle’s Golden Globes dress, I thought I could never forgive her. Alas, she proved me wrong. ALL IS FORGIVEN MIZZ BERRY, for you have outdone even yourself with this custom Versace gown!

And yes, it was Versace she wore to the Globes, but I’ve spoken to Halle since – we’re best friends you know – and she apologised profusely and agreed with me, after I made her repeat it 100 times, that some dresses ought to be left on the catwalks. This one however, needs to be EVERYWHERE. It’s simply… stunning.

Black and silver is a winning colour combo for Halle, it sets off her dark features perfectly, and the boxy shoulder and delicate cleavage and back straps are added pizazz that makes Halle best dressed number three for me.

WELL DONE LOVE, well done. Now send Donatella a box of choccies. She did good with this one.

Fan Bingbing at the Oscars 2013 – Best Dressed #2

Blimey. This is one SERIOUS dress. And if anyone can get away with it, it’s Fan Bingbing. The Chinese actress is famed for her fashion choices as much as her film roles (not that I’ve seen her in anything, apart from on red carpets), and now with this fuchsia pink, structurally amazing Marchesa gown, from the autumn/winter 2013 collection, under Fan’s proverbial belt, she wins the best dressed number two award from me.

It’s so important to not let a dress wear you, and as massive and dramatic as this Marchesa number is, Fan takes control. She has a teeny tiny frame, so it could be a disaster – kind of like a really skinny woman looking over the top of a big pile of washing, but she ALWAYS owns the outfit she has on.

And for that reason, I admire her greatly.

Grammy Awards 2013 – The Very Red Carpet Roundup

This time of year is a little too much in terms of award ceremonies. We’ve had lots, and we’ve still got more to come, including the Oscars. And with the BAFTAs and Grammy awards taking place last night, on different sides of the pond, I’m sure a lot of bloggers, picture researchers and online press didn’t know whether they were coming or going!

Take a minute to think about those poor stylists, hair and make up artists and general schleppers who probably lose fingers and limbs whilst stitching something last minute, blowing drying a fringe for the 100th time or stabbing themselves with a pair of tweezers, all to make this lot look… acceptable!

Here’s what I thought…

*So it may not be the most flattering shape, but major kudos goes to Adele who wore her Valentino couture gown with such pride. I love it because it’s not another black Burberry number. And the colour is insanely gorgeous on her! Well done Adele*

*Beyonce wore Osman, a British designer, so already I’m loving it. And I think the off-centre blocking on top is oh-so-chic. She looks amazing. A best dressed for me*
*And whilst I’m talking about one Destiny’s Child, I might as well stay on the theme. Kelly Rowland has NEVER looked so smokin’ hot. She probably has to be quite careful in this Georges Chakra – one false move and EVERYTHING is on show – but she works it so friggin’ well!*

*All those shots of her coming out of Chris Brown’s house looking a little… dishevelled, and then BAM! Rhianna is the only woman in red who stole my heart last night*

*I can hear Nicole Scherzinger from here – “No baby, no!” Why the hell does J Lo try this hard?? She’s SO sexy already, this just looks like a parody of herself. Since Angelina, NO ONE should show off this much leg, and you forgot to attach your wig, love. Also, $6million worth of diamonds does not an outfit make!*

*Kathy Griffin definitely wins best black dress award. Look at that body! Look at those boobs! Here’s how to do an LBD (LONG black dress) kids!*
*And here’s an example of how not to do an LBD. Alicia likes to do statement, but I just don’t get it. Yes, her figure is gorgeous, but the straps and croc-material… all a little too much I think*

*I’d love to know Riccardo’s thinking behind this custom Givenchy gown that Florence is, strangely enough, making look rather amazing. Sea urchin-cum-dinosaur maybe? Either way, this emerald green on her is spectacular*
*Another best dressed for me, Janelle Monae. She does the masculine thing SO well. So very well. This is top-to-toe perfection*
*God doesn’t’ Katy Perry look a zillion times better with black hair opposed to that granny purple rinse? And yes, this dress is very ‘booby’, but the great Gucci cut and embellishment are outstanding*
*I nearly didn’t include this one, personally nothing Nicole does post Antonio Berardi is any good, but I thought I would because I thought husband Keith Urban’s head tilt, sympathetic face did all the talking – ‘I know I know, another disappointing, boring dress. I tried, I really did!’
*Ohhh God, I can’t believe I’m typing this, but Taylor    Swift    looked     amazing.
Phewww, there, I did it. But she does! This J. Mendel gown is gorgeous. And I even love her hair. I just HATE her music*

Golden Globes 2013 red carpet round up – the VERY best and worst…

It’s officially award season ladies and gents. The Golden Globe Awards 2013 last night kick started the rounds of red carpet craziness of the year and, as usual, there were those that shined, and then there was… Rachel Zoe.

Oh dear.

Here’s my little run down from the night. I’ve tried to put them in order of amazingness, with Lucy Liu winning hands down. And remember, this is only my opinion. I expect everyone has had a little praising/bitching session this morning…

***Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera pre-fall 2013***
THIS is how to work a red carpet. THIS is how to make a statement when people have all but forgotten about you on the carpets. Lucy’s curtain-chic gown is simply stunning. And the hair, the hair is amazing too. WINNER!

***Nicole Richie in Naeem Khan Spring 2013***
I think this is Nicole’s best red carpet look ever. The powder blue sets off her dark skin perfectly, and the long sleeves and neckline make it even more elegant. Just gorgeous!

***Katharine McPhee in Theyskens’ Theory Spring 2013***
It’s not because I have an unhealthy obsession with her show Smash, it’s because Katharine bought the sex-glam factor to the red carpet. This is a masterclass at head-to-toe black dress glamour.
***Lea Michele in Elie Saab Spring 2012***
In this dress, Lea makes it look like summer, not the middle of winter. The detailing is outstanding and I love the halter neck shape. A real good gown.
***Julianne Moore in Tom Ford***
She always always always looks so elegant. One of the only monochrome dresses on the Golden Globes red carpet, trust Julianne to make it one of the overall best of the night.
***Emily Blunt in Michael Kors***
Cut out detailing goes one of two ways: gross and cheap or gorgeous. Emily’s dress is the latter. I like her risk taking here, I love the scraped back hair and I love that bag.
***Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein***
And interesting and bold choice, Jessica describes the colour of her dress as ‘sea foam’. And it works so well with her red colouring. Just enough cleavage on show, and a clever use of origami folds make this dress a show stopper.
***Kerry Washington in Miu Miu***
Can she do no wrong at the moment? I don’t think so. What an amazing mix of sheer, nude and embellishment, and how gorgeous is does her hair look? Another red carpet hit for Kerry.
***Rosario Dawson in Antonio Berardi***
‘Haha, I know I know, it’s the best I’ve looked!’ That’s what she’s saying here. And it’s true. I’m a big fan of a peplum on a floor length gown, it gives shape to even the most up-and-down figures. And this blue, this powder blue again. She’s got every right to smile like this.
***Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen***
She’s another funny one for me – sometimes amazing, sometimes not. This, however, is one of her best. A dramatic neck and low cut AND this slinky makes this gown my favourite of the black dresses. Keep it up Kate!
***Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka***
Another black dress thumbs up. Helen is loving the black/gold mix of late, and I still can’t believe this woman is 67-years-old!
***Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Saint Laurent Spring 2013***
Always smokin’ hot, RHW flashes some leg in this sultry, vampy black dress. Another halter neck shape, another perfect look.
***Sofia Vergara in Michael Cinco***
Who? I have no idea who the designer is either, but trust Sofia to wear the most amount of sequins on the red carpet and STILL make them look uber glamourous. Her curves look impeccable in this dress.
***Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture Fall 2012***
A bit of a predictable one, but still I really love the full skirt on this gown, and I love how Jennifer has belted it too, it breaks it up a bit. The best red dress on the red carpet by far.
***Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad***
Here’s the thing, JLo loves a barely-there outfit of late, and not that I have a problem with it, but it’s becoming a bit… samey. Does she have share in Murad or something? Her body looks INSANE here, but just a bit over this kind of dress on her now.

***Claire Danes in Atelier Versace***
Reading Twitter last night, people loved this dress on Claire, but it just left me a bit… meh. It’s nice, and considering she gave birth very recently she looks great, but I can’t get excited about it. Soz love.

***Rachel Weisz in Louis Vuitton***
I would have loved this dress last year, before Stella McCartney did practically a whole collection of sheer and spots, but now I don’t. And considering Vuitton’s amazing Spring collection, Rachel could have done better if you ask me.

***Amanda Seyfried in custom Givenchy***
This is a gorgeous dress, no two ways about it, but having marvelled at Riccardo Tisci’s new Spring Summer collection, I was disappointed that Amanda wore this creation. It wasn’t wow enough.
***Megan Fox in Dolce and Gabbana***
Don’t hate me for putting Megan all the way down here, it’s just that this dress did nothing for me. Her pout and smouldering looks are way too overpowering for something so pretty. She needs something grittier, like Givenchy!
***Anne Hathaway in Chanel Couture***
This bores me to tears. Considering Anne hit the headlines in a questionable Givenchy dress and then that Tom Ford ensemble, she’s obviously going understated for the Globes, but this is just plain boring. Non non non.

***Thandie Newton in Giles***
She looks as impressed with this dress as I am. And her slouch speaks volumes too. It’s just not a Golden Globes red carpet dress. It’s a cocktail dress. Thandie, come on, there was SOOO many amazing dresses in that Giles collection. Humph.
***Sienna Miller in Erdem***
So on the red carpet, Sienna said she had a dress in mind but didn’t like it when she tried it on. I think she should have stuck to it. I don’t like anything about this custom made Erdem. It’s meant to be cutesy, but it doesn’t quite work. Can’t put my finger on why though…
***Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen***
It might be fashion blasphemy, but I think this dress looks cheap. The middle ‘thing’ annoys and upsets me, and the detailing at the neck looks weird. Shame, as I LOVED Nicole in that Berardi dress last year!
***Heidi Klum in Alexandre Vauthier couture***
Is it just me who thinks this white dress is a nightmare? I just think it’s so unflattering on her. I much prefer Heidi’s full Versace wardrobe from the EMAs. Her hair and makeup is gorgeous however, her saving grace.
***Julianne Hough in Monique Lhuillier***
NOOOOOOOOO. What is this?? Is Julianne secretly friendly with a Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star?? That’s the ONLY explanation for this disaster. I HATE it. Too white, too big, too embellished. YUK.

***Halle Berry in Atelier Versace***
This is seriously one of the ugliest dresses I’ve seen for a long time. And it’s Versace, so you can imagine how much it pains me to say that. Halle should have known better. She should have stepped away from the ugly rail. She should really fire her stylist now. This is definitely a dress that should stay on the model in a catwalk show. NFRCC – Not For Red Carpet Consumption.

***And then there was Rachel Zoe***
Words actually fail me.

She rarely impresses me on the red carpet, but this was AMAZING

It took the Oscars for her to pull this white Tom Ford dress and cape out the bag.
Tres impressed.

Again, not the red carpet, but couldn’t leave these out!

Red Carpet Roundup – Cate Blanchett, Katie Holmes and THAT Geri Halliwell dress…

I just thought I’d share with you the best and, erm, most interesting looks (note how I’m kinda sitting on the fence in an attempt not to annoy anyone!) from the red carpets of this week. To be honest, this should just be all about Cate Blanchett, she’s totally blown me away with her two recent looks, but there’s a couple of others that have caught my eye…

Above: Cate Blanchett at the Hobbit premiere in London last night, wearing an AMAZING white Givenchy Spring Summer 2013 gown
Below: in a gorgeous Peter Pilotto top and skirt combo.

Who cares if everyone saw Anne Hathaway’s goodies, she sure as hell makes up for her Sharon Stone Basic Instinct moment in this daring Tom Ford cape-back gown. The shoes, however, look a bit too leg brace-y for me.
I usually find Katie Holmes utterly uninteresting and boring, and very safe with her fashion choices, but this purple velvet Tom Ford dress is probably the best she’s ever worn! Great colour for a brunette, and a sexy length and cut for her too. WOW moment.

I’m so bloody impressed with Sarah Jessica Parker right now. She’s a fashion icon, we know, but to wear this Erdem two-piece that could easily have drowned her, and look THIS amazing is a feat in itself. Definitely the best of the week!
Ohhh ‘ere she is, little miss flasher! I mean, what’s with the showing off your smalls Kristen? Haven’t you learnt your lesson? It’s not even nice! She looks awkward, and quite frankly that easel and board look better than she does.

Geri, love, stop it. Just stop. Stop trying to get all the attention when you look so hideous. What’s this toilet roll holder you’re wearing? It’s so wrong. It’s so mother-of-the-bride. In fact the only one I like here is Victoria, obviously. She’s working that School Gate chic to the max!
This picture upsets me.

Allison Williams… I don’t know who she is, but I LOVE her dress..

In my old age, and the fact that I don’t seem to ever watch all the TV I want to, I’m a little out of touch with some of the new Hollywood actresses. If they’re not a Real Housewife or Cher, the chances are I wouldn’t know them from Adam. I’m sure Allison Williams is GREAT in Girls (I just Googled her BTW), and without sounding like I’m just dismissing her acting abilities, if she lacks anything in the on-screen department, she definitely makes up for it with her wardrobe choices.

THIS is a red carpet dress. This here L’Wren Scott Spring Summer 2013 frock is, I think, one of my favourites from the whole year.

Why? I hear you ask.

Well for starters I always think it’s a very clever move to wear red on a red carpet. Secondly the shape and length are perfect on her, thirdly it’s sparkly, and I can’t not love a sparkly dress – although what is great about this one is that it’s elegant sequins, not tacky, show-girl sequins. Fourthly the neck line is interesting and not in a ‘lets see how much boob we can flash’ kind of way that seems rife on the carpets of late.

I just think it’s a gorgeous gorgeous dress. Well done Allison Williams. Whoever you are!
