The unexpected Met Gala best dressed…

Probably the most anticipated red carpet of the year for the fashion industry. And the most creative for the celebrities and their stylists.

YES, there is always a theme – this year it was Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons so think avant-garde amazingness - but they are always so broad, giving the stars license to go crazy with their looks.

We’ve all ogled over the red carpet pictures, I have multiple times, and there were a few ‘slebs that did it for me (minus Rihanna, of course. She wins). And this is why…

Ordinarily it would be a NO to this much pink Duchess satin, but what with the REAL black flowers – yes REAL, as a nod to Comme, Zoe’s hair and makeup and the dramatics of the cape, this is a YES YES BLOODY YESSSSS!

Jackie O’s daughter to you and I, and an honorary chair of the ball. I totally salute her bravery, passion for the theme and courage and confidence to wear this dress. It’s not the most flattering piece, but it’s a statement, and totally in keeping with the theme. She does have arms though, right?

I couldn’t let the Met go past without talking about a power suit, but I wasn’t expecting to fall so deeply in love with one! This French model and actress completely stole the show for me. I’m OBSESSED with this look on her. The colour! The clashing! The embellishment! The hair! The red lip! Oh it’s just TOOOOOO good!

Amy, a ‘special correspondent’ to Vanity Fair (not entirely sure what a special corespondent is or does), chose this insanely amazing Thom Browne gown. But it was her severeness – hair, makeup, facial features – that really made me take notice. But back to the dress… OH. MY. GODDDDD. Now THIS is a piece. I can’t even put into words how much I love it! It, and she, is just… mesmerising!

The ‘Black-ish’ star was one of my favourites of the night for obvious reasons. You’d think all the huge stars would have delved into the Comme Des Garcons archive, but clearly not! Leave it Tracee! The blue is great on her, and the sculptural cut is amazing…

This little firecracker has been on my fashion radar for some time now, she ALWAYS looks amazing (thanks to her mega stylist, Law Roach – also responsible for Celine Dion’s uber style switch up of late). This gown is SO statement, so ‘look at me’, so fabulous! It’s a bit more romantic than the theme in question, but still, what a look!

She looks like a really chic, fabulous, dramatic undercover agent. Who isn’t undercover at all. But really wearing one of the most, in fact THE most epic trench coat! BRAVO, PRIYANKA!

Cruising in stripes…

Processed with VSCO with n2 preset

{DISCLOSURE} Before you go hunting for this top on ASOS, it’s womens, and actually a t-shirt dress.

{DISCLOSURE 2} I never considered myself the nautical stripes kinda person until I saw this top.

I’ve just been on a cruise holiday for Mummy G’s 60th birthday, and I wanted a statement, camp, ‘first day on boat’ novelty striped something, and I ended up loving it more than I thought!

Also, I’ve always lived by the rule that you should never wear horizontal stripes if you’re over sample size. This top smashed that rule into pieces. So, ignore me.

I don’t look too round, do I?

Processed with VSCO with n1 preset

This holiday saw a few firsts for me: wearing white on a beach, eating three rounds of toast before midday, drinking 5 frozen Miami Vices before 1pm, wearing stripes and meaning it.

It will still remain one of those eye-rolling trends for me though – ‘nautical’ ALWAYS comes round every year.

Predictable fashion maybe, but not for me!

Pineapples got me again…

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

I just can’t get enough. I’ve literally gone pineapple mad.

Don’t get me wrong, flamingos still have my heart, but there’s something about pineapples…

So far I’ve got: pineapple shaped candles, candles that smell like pineapples, big gold china pineapples, glass bowls in the shape of pineapples, trousers/shirts/tees with pineapple prints.

And then THIS, my latest pineapple conquest from River Island (get it here). I’m going on a cruise next week, and this is coming with me!

In other news, here are some pineapple things next on my list…

5 reasons why I love Raf Simons…

1. I got my first piece when I graduated from University… I remember it vividly – my dad took me to Harrods and bought me the most amazing oversized hoodie with a cut out at the back, and a print put in its place. From Raf’s summer 2004 collection. I still have it.

2. He interned for Walter van Beirendonck in the early ’90s. It was Walter who took him to see his first fashion show which inspired him to want to do it himself. I LOVE WVB!

3. Guaranteed to always find something statement in any of his collections.

4. This shirt. The best thing I’ve had on my back for a LONG time. (Above and below at Harvey Nichols)

5. The SS17 collection that this shirt is from: more incredible oversized pieces, emblazoned with the late photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe’s dark, moody photographs. An exceptional offering of menswear. (Shop more below)

The very best dressed of the week… Celine Dion, Janelle Monae and more!

Award season has basically taken over every news, celebrity and fashion site recently. The Oscars (and the massive blunder) dominated last week’s headlines, and the Vanity Fair after party (personally I prefer this red carpet than the main event) got lots of column inches too. Like Sarah Paulson (above, middle) who chose this amazing illusion dress by Ronald van der Kemp. The contrast of the mustard and the black is mesmerising – I can’t stop looking at her here! And the ruffled sleeve adds just enough flounce.

But there was a couple of other surprises too… actually it’s no surprise that Celine Dion tops the best dressed list again. With her new stylist in tow – Law Roach (@luxurylaw) – she can literally do no wrong. He has literally transformed this Diva’s wardrobe. Here she wears this powder blue bow-detail Christian Siriano gown to the Beauty and the Beast premiere. I’m still open mouthed about this look… her best EVER red carpet dress me thinks!

And what about Rihanna in this head-to-toe Monse look? She wore this to pick up her Humanitarian Of The Year award from Harvard (wtf?), and while I’ve seen a lot of polarised opinions about it, I think it’s oh-so-gorgeous on her! The fold over neckline, the belt, the slit, the matching boots… it’s all so amazing!

And I can’t not mention Janelle Monae from the Oscars and beyond…

These were her two standout looks from the night. Left, at the awards, wearing Elie Saab couture: the most epic gown she has worn. It looks like her stylist, the amazing Maeve Reilly (@stylememaeve), has put extra padding on the hips, because on the model it didn’t look this wide. But it’s the embellishments and sheer and belt and general fabulousness that makes this so iconic. And going with the full gown theme, she wore this Alexandre Vauthier couture dress to the Vanity Fair party. Another EPIC choice!

The singer-turned-actress is famous for only wearing a monochrome palette, although she has broken away from the black and white mould of late adding yellow – this Barbara Bui trouser suit is so very chic on her – and gold – this Chanel couture sequinned jacket dress. But it was this mash up of stripes and geometric patterns, all by Ferragamo, that left me wanting more from her monochrome love affair. Just so striking!

Let’s see what the rising star will do next!
