The unexpected Met Gala best dressed…

I’VE FINALLY DECIDED THAT THESE SEVEN STARS ARE THE WINNERS FROM THE MET GALA MADNESS!

Probably the most anticipated red carpet of the year for the fashion industry. And the most creative for the celebrities and their stylists.

YES, there is always a theme – this year it was Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons so think avant-garde amazingness - but they are always so broad, giving the stars license to go crazy with their looks.

We’ve all ogled over the red carpet pictures, I have multiple times, and there were a few ‘slebs that did it for me (minus Rihanna, of course. She wins). And this is why…

*ZOE KRAVITZ IN OSCAR DE LA RENTA*

Ordinarily it would be a NO to this much pink Duchess satin, but what with the REAL black flowers – yes REAL, as a nod to Comme, Zoe’s hair and makeup and the dramatics of the cape, this is a YES YES BLOODY YESSSSS!

*CAROLINE KENNEDY IN ARCHIVE COMME DES GARCONS*

Jackie O’s daughter to you and I, and an honorary chair of the ball. I totally salute her bravery, passion for the theme and courage and confidence to wear this dress. It’s not the most flattering piece, but it’s a statement, and totally in keeping with the theme. She does have arms though, right?

*AYMELINE VALADE IN MARNI*

I couldn’t let the Met go past without talking about a power suit, but I wasn’t expecting to fall so deeply in love with one! This French model and actress completely stole the show for me. I’m OBSESSED with this look on her. The colour! The clashing! The embellishment! The hair! The red lip! Oh it’s just TOOOOOO good!

*AMY FINE COLLINS IN THOM BROWNE*

Amy, a ‘special correspondent’ to Vanity Fair (not entirely sure what a special corespondent is or does), chose this insanely amazing Thom Browne gown. But it was her severeness – hair, makeup, facial features – that really made me take notice. But back to the dress… OH. MY. GODDDDD. Now THIS is a piece. I can’t even put into words how much I love it! It, and she, is just… mesmerising!

*TRACEE ELLIS ROSS IN COMME DES GARCONS*

The ‘Black-ish’ star was one of my favourites of the night for obvious reasons. You’d think all the huge stars would have delved into the Comme Des Garcons archive, but clearly not! Leave it Tracee! The blue is great on her, and the sculptural cut is amazing…

*ZENDAYA IN DOLCE & GABBANA ALTA MODA COUTURE*

This little firecracker has been on my fashion radar for some time now, she ALWAYS looks amazing (thanks to her mega stylist, Law Roach – also responsible for Celine Dion’s uber style switch up of late). This gown is SO statement, so ‘look at me’, so fabulous! It’s a bit more romantic than the theme in question, but still, what a look!

*PRIYANKA CHOPRA IN CUSTOM RALPH LAUREN COLLECTION*

She looks like a really chic, fabulous, dramatic undercover agent. Who isn’t undercover at all. But really wearing one of the most, in fact THE most epic trench coat! BRAVO, PRIYANKA!

The 10 most important Met Gala 2015 red carpet moments…

met gala 2015 red carpet

I’m not going to do a whole long list of best and worst dressed this year. Quite frankly, there are enough sites with those lists, and because I haven’t got a bitchy bone in my body (ha!), I thought I’d just concentrate on the 10 looks from last night’s Met Gala that are the most important/iconic/amazing/winner-worthy.

So, here we go…

IT’S CHER!!!

I’m sill reeling in the fact that my ultimate hero, the most amazing diva that ever lived (apart from Dolly, Tiny and Liza obvs) was seen on the red carpet. She was a guest of Marc Jacobs, and they were seen hand holding all the way down the red carpet. I mean, I’m still speechless. Sparkly, incredible, amazing Cher.

FKA TWIGS

Yes, Cher might have won the ‘I can’t believe it’ award, but RPatz’s girlfriend definitely won a best dressed award. Not many people could get away with this Christopher Kane dress. She can. It’s just mesmerizing. All tangled bodies, claustrophobia-chic!

DIANE KRUGER

She is one of the only stars I look forward to seeing on a red carpet, always putting her own spin on things. I imagine she threw all the other options her stylist pulled out the window, chucked the rail on the floor, shoved a flower in her hair, and put this on, storming out the hotel, looking friggin’ gorgeous. It’s Chanel couture by the way. And one of the only people to do trousers on the red carpet. She’s an important style icon.

FAN BINGBING

So the theme was China Through A Looking Glass, so it’s only right to talk about the best dressed actress to come out of China. She is SERVING IT!! She’s like a porcelain Chinese Oscar, billowing down the red carpet in her Christopher Bu cape. Oh I just can’t even look anymore… I just want to be her!!! (Or at least her best friend. Or her wardrobe assistant. Or just her maid)

ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY

Super models on red carpets are two a penny now, but few come close to this English beauty. Wearing Atelier Versace, Rosie was the epitome of perfection. This is second skin dressing done AMAZINGLY. The hair, the makeup, the open-mouth, the slit, the cut outs, the cinnamon swirl boob. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

MADONNA

I give Madonna a hard time, I’m the first to admit it, but I just expect so much, and feel she doesn’t really deliver anymore. But here, with Jeremy Scott kneeling at her feet, she’s EVERYTHING! Her dress may be totally off-theme, but I love that it’s age-appropriate, fun, playful, shapely. The cape is a great addition too. But who’s face has she borrowed? Sorry sorry sorry, I said I’m not bitchy.

RIHANNA

This is an important look, not because it’s amazing, or that she is best dressed, because it isn’t, and she’s not. But it’s the most jarring, kitsch, flamboyant of all the dresses on the this red carpet, and takes up the most square footage of any too. It’s so grotesquely Liberace that for some reason it works. And for that reason, Rihanna remains important. She’s wearing Guo Pei.

ZENDAYA

Oh my God, I mean, THIS is how to wear the theme, remain true to your style, and be youthful all at the same time. We don’t need young stars looking older, we need them current. Zendaya is a new style icon, with designers chucking collections at her to wear. I love love LOVE this. It’s dramatically perfect. She’s wearing Fausto Puglisi.

HANNAH BAGSHAWE

Or Mrs. Eddie Redmayne to you and I, is by far the best dressed ‘other half’ at the moment. It’s because her hubby has been catapulted into Oscars stardom. She must be having a ‘pinch me’ moment. And I am too. This Valentino dress is Julia-Roberts-Valentino-Oscars-dress amazing. I can’t stop staring. She could have done more with her hair and makeup, but she wins another best dressed gong.

SOLANGE

Let’s hope there was no more lift fighting moments for this one. Her Giles dress could have been used as a weapon. Not like a brick or something heavy, but it would either snap up its prey, like a Venus fly trap, or just hypnotize it, like one of those magic eye pictures. Either way, Solange remains an important fashion player… it’s moments like this that she’ll go down in HERstory for.

The Power Trouser is here to stay, says the Met Gala 2014

met gala 2014 fashion trousers

Oh you lot totally know that I was LIVING for all the trouser wearers on the red carpet from this year’s Met Gala (Monday). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… there’s something so powerful about a woman in a trouser(suit). You can’t not stare! Not only that, but it’s a big nod to some of my all time favourite divas, namely Liza Minnelli, Joan and Jackie Collins and Diane Keaton.

All these ladies rocked trousers in some form. Cara Delevingne was actually my least favourite – I feel like this white pair could be worn any where – but she was guest to Stella McCartney (who dressed Cara), who looked incredible in one of her own designs – asymmetric long-length top over black trousers. So super fabulous.

Brie Larson has to be the ultimate trouser wearer for the Met Gala. She’s in Prada. Her kaftan top over trouser ensemble really does remind me of Liza Minnelli, it’s just so fabulous. I get that people would hate this, but it shows something so different to red carpet dressing!

Kristen Wiig wears Balenciaga, and for me is the most chic of all the women here. The circular shape of the top, with its sequinned lining, over the trousers makes for a very directional look. Just brilliant. And Amber Valletta and French actress Isabelle Huppert opted for shiny trouser suits that definitely vamped up the glamour.

So you see, women in trousers are officially IN. And there ain’t no better place to judge what’s in and what’s not than the Met Gala’s red carpet!
