Mens fashion is exciting at the moment. Never has there been so much choice, never has it been so avant-guarde. Designers are taking risks, the high street is taking risks, and therefore us customers are taking risks and it's a good job we are - variety was definitely needed just when I thought mens fashion was becoming tiresome and overly generic. I thought we would never come out of the check shirt haze we were being dragged into (not that I have anything against check shirts, but a check shirt is a check shirt is a check shirt if you get my meaning). But hurrah, we are! As I've said many a time, H&M are front runners in the high street high fashion stakes, and the designers, it seems are also going that extra mile. Raf Simons has his rubber-sleeved jackets out at the moment, Westwood has kilts and trousers with the biggest of all drop-crotches in store and Alexander McQueen, the man behind the 'mankini', has hooded capes, unimaginably over sized knits and paint splattered trousers for sale this winter.
Anyway anyway anyway, I stray from my point - why oh why do we need man leggings? I bumped into some in Topman, literally, knocked the whole rack over, which is hopefully where they stayed. Haven't skinny jeans got skinny enough? Straight leg skinny, super-stretch skinny, even spray-on skinny... I can just about cope with all of these although would NEVER dream of wearing them. Meggings, I'm afraid, goes beyond everything I stand for. I know I'm sounding dramatic, but I really must stress my point. I am a staunch believer in dressing up and standing out - dress to express and all - and I would encourage any man to try new things, however feminine it may be. But for Gods sake, let's keep some dignity. Let's save leggings and baggy tops to women, we have enough in the trouser department (Uniqlo's check ones for instance) now without resorting to lycra and viscose. Besides which, I have no idea what shoes you would wear with meggings, everything would look wrong.
No no no, don't do it. And if you have, return them immediately. I'm sorry, just no. Love everything else though! :)
