Just when we thought the size zero fiasco was dead and buried, just when we thought designers felt confident enough to send bigger models down the runway, just when Beth Ditto made it cool for larger ladies to do body con and JUST when knitwear king Mark Fast put plus size models in his cool spider-web dresses and subsequently lost his idiotic 'thin-minded' stylist - good riddance - Selfridges goes and pulls it's only plus size range from the rails. It's so disappointing!
The Marina Rinaldi range, which offers clothes in sizes 14 to 26, has been removed from store and now the largest size available on many of the brands is a 16, with a few 18s scattered throughout the racks. My theory - they have probably employed some super-thin, super-fashion super bitch on their buying team who no longer thinks larger woman are worthy of carrying a yellow bag on their shoulder. It's quite ironic really seeing as nearly half the UK's population of women are a size 16.
It comes at a time when the high street is becoming a lot more accommodating. A lot of stores including Marks and Spencer and Kookai now stock larger sizes and earlier this year, Evans collaborated with the uber-cool Ms Ditto to create a range for their plus size customers which included bold prints and party dresses. So Selfridges, it seems, are alienating themselves from other stores - what makes them so special huh?? Is there going to be a guest-list entry system now? Will they employ one of those really annoying door-girls you find at West End clubs to turn away what they see as the riffraff, aka the lovely larger lady?
Uh oh Selfridges, you've got some explaining to do!!!
