So here we are once again. Sex And The City season. I'm not about to rant endlessly about how much I love the film and how wrong all the evil critics are (although everything in that sentence is true), that's not the point of this post. What I will say however is that I have now seen the film three times and each time it got funnier. We all know that it's not a serious film and we all know that the first had a much more 'real' story line. We are also, I hope, very aware that the series and the films alike are very much there for an escape away from reality. Come on, how often do you get four women who have a massive disposable income dedicated to AMAZING fashion? So why don't we all shush and simply take the film for it's fun face value?!
What I wanted to say however, is that fashion can most definitely still be fun no matter your age, sex, height, weight, colour hair or budget. I think the new SATC film portrays a part of that perfectly. OK, so the gals all have pretty decent bodies, but Samantha is fighting the Menopause Battle (she's "Fifty-fucking-two"), Miranda is a vibrant red head, Charlotte is a mum of two with a J-Lo bum and Carrie is... pretty much a Halston Heritage walking advert. Yet they manage to all look fab throughout the two and a half hour couture marathon.
DON'T look to them to copy their wardrobe piece by piece because believe me, you'll bankrupt yourselves with just one shoe, but I urge you to look into emulating some of the outfits. Samantha's spike-shouldered red dress takes fashion from the sublime to the ridiculous but who cares? Do it do it do it!
Do you think Patricia Field, when she goes out, thinks 'shall I tone this down?' or do you think Leigh Bowery (a man, I know, but stresses my point) ever took a moment to think 'hmmm, is this too much?' or 'maybe I shouldn't'. I think not.
My advice - wear what ever you want to. My motto - dress to express.
