I waited with baited breath for the show reports by all the influential web sites and editors on Mary Katrantzou's autumn winter 2011 show before I put up a post. Why? Because I wanted to see what they all had to say, to see how many lovely adjectives they could cram into every sentence.
Falling head over heels for Mary's collection last season, with all the lamp-shade shapes and utterly breathtaking views printed onto dresses, I was nail-bitingly excited to see what she'd do for autumn winter. She out did herself, that's what she did!
The show notes tell us that it was worldly objects such as Faberge eggs, ancient Chinese costumes and Meissen porcelain prompted the prints for Mary's new collection. You'd be forgiven for thinking how on earth a fashion designer would interpret these into clothing, but leave it to Mary, she knows exactly what to do. Especially as this season sees Mary venturing into knitwear - as if it can't get any better! "I gave the knitters in Italy a nightmare... they had to re-set the machines for every single line" she told Hilary Alexander.
And not only was there knitwear etched with the extraordinary prints chosen for this season, but there were silks, leggings and velvet, all with the intricate artwork emblazoned onto them.
Mary's evolving her creativity. Not only by showing separates and leggings, but also fabrics, layering her bold pieces and and and, more excitingly, this new billowing silhouette. She only touched upon it this season, but I have no doubts she will take to it like a duck to water. Flowy silk ball gowns next, can't wait!
Prints are big for the season, it's clear from other designers, and Mary is very much leading the pack. She revolutionized the print if you ask me.
