What a night! New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala ball (what a bleedin' mouthful!) was held last night and, as always, the red carpet was a who's who of A-listers in a who's who of designer gowns.
Naturally there were disappointments, but I'm happy to say the winners definitely prevailed this year. With the late Alexander McQueen as a theme to the night, a lot of the stars wore his creations, which instantly made the red carpet a more interesting place!
Here's a few (well, a lot) of my dos and donts from the night.
Enjoy!
DO...
...pay homage to Rupaul like Iman in an, erm, understated Stella McCartney all-in-one
...feel gorgeous like Liv Tyler in Givenchy couture - one of the best couture collections of spring 2011. A best dressed for me!
...sleeves and sequins like SJP in Alexander McQueen
...originality (or curtains) like Andre Leon Talley, my fashion hero!
...sexy vamp cum elegant fashionista like Diane Kruger in Jason Wu
...highstreet like Ginnifer Goodwin. Emerald green custom made Topshop has never looked so good!
...have another styling triumph like Gwyneth, wearing a slinky Stella McCartney
...sleek silk like Freida Pinto. A best dressed for me in this Chanel dress with built in collar and tie
...make an entrance in body hugging shocking pink Michael Kors like Brooklyn Decker
...bring a bit of sunshine like Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein Collection. Another best dressed for me!
...channel a draped Grecian goddess like Blake Lively in Chanel couture (obvs!)
...Lady in Red like Gisele wearing a show stopping Alexander McQueen (rouge is most definitely her colour)
...stick to your favourite designer like Renne Zellweger who looked gorgeous in a lacy Carolina Herrera gown
...do frothy Marchesa like Miranda Kerr oh, and Nicholas Kirkwood heels too!
...more Marchesa drama like Shalom Harlow (not sure who she is?). An acquired taste, but pure brilliant craftsmanship
...pretty embellishment like Dakota Fanning in a stunning Valentino gown
...Morticia Addams drama like Christina Ricci in Zac Posen
...a mix of Givenchy and McQueen like unique-dresser Anna Dello Russo (editor-at-large of Vogue Japan)
...continue breaking fashion boundaries like Daphne Guinness, McQueen's muse, in Alexander McQueen
DONT...
...drag up like Naomi Campbell. That hair is WAY too much, and that McQueen frock just isn't right for her
...choose something SO not you like Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler. Looks awkward, as usual
...go too bridal like a super skinny Jennifer Hudson in Vera Wang, something slinky next please
...go to severe like J Lo in Gucci. I love the dress, just not on her, with this hair. Nope nope nope
...get carried away like Fergie. I hate to say this, because Marchesa never do anything wrong, but this dress is NOT right for her on this red carpet. On a bride, yes.
...bore me like Alexa Chung does time and again. Even in Christopher Kane she looks drab!
...get it SO wrong like Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera. This dress looks offensive on her. Wrong colour, wrong shape. Stick to Westwood Chris! (and greens and purples!)
...make Chanel look dowdy like Anna Wintour. She might be the Holy Grail of fashion, and I might get wiped off the face of the earth for slandering her, but i just don't like it!
...do this again Rosie Huntington-Whiteley! You're SO gorgeous, but this Burberry ISN'T!
...be this 'blah' Rihanna. I expect more from you!
...EVER do this EVER again Serena Williams. Leave this Oscar de la Renta dress at the door next time. And take that damn hat off. Worst dressed of the night for me. Like a frothing disaster!
