Yes, she might be Judy Garland's daughter, but she's an institution in her own right. Liza Minnelli played the Royal Albert Hall last night in one of only a few dates in the UK. I've seen the fabulous cockroach of Hollywood (as in, she's NEVER going to die and survives everything!) a couple of times and each time I'm left a little speechless.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that, when she's stood in front of you at curtain-up, Liza might not be able to sing or move like she used to, and forgetting she's had almost every joint below her waist replaced, she can definitely still do both... in a BIG way.
The Very Mummy G had Liza at a gig last year. I met her backstage. Not only does she chain smoke (fag in mouth as soon as she's off stage), but she needs help getting up and down the stairs at the side of the stage due to her hips and knees. But then, bizarrely enough, when Liza is on stage, she moves about like a 12 year old girl. She's quite clearly in her element up there, more at home than probably in one of her mansions. And it's heart warming.
On stage last night Liza jokes: "I'm Dorothy's daughter up top, but the tin man down below". Gotta love Liza with a Z!!
