I escaped the London rain on Friday for some Monaco heat. The Very Mummy G does a lot of work over in Monte Carlo - yes, that bubble of insecure rich people, amazing shopping and home to the one and only Dame Shirley Bassey - so one of the perks is heading over to the principality every now and again. Last year it was to see Liza Minnelli and Grace Jones, both absolutely incredible, and this time to see Janet Jackson.
I've never been a mad fan of Janet, I like her newest stuff, like Feedback, but a lot of her older music does, to be very honest, sound all the same. Having said that, she knows how to dance, even still at 103... I mean 45. Performance is her thing, much like her late brother, Michael. The one thing that really disappointed me was her styling. By Monte Carlo standards, she looked like the caretaker. Blackish/grey jeans, plain black vest and flat boots. Hmmm. The only saving grace was the sparkly long multi-chain, probably Chanel, hanging from one side of her jeans. She's always been a bit street, our Janet!
Janet should have really headed down to the most fabulous designer second hand shop that The Very Mummy G introduced me too. Le Dressing is probably the chicest thrift shop I've ever seen. Small in size, hence no menswear, but full to the rafters with vintage Chanel, Balmain, Lanvin, Chloe, Giambattista Valli, Louboutin... just everything. I nearly died. The Very Mummy G a close second.
Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take many pictures, well none really, but I sneaked a couple. That's a rail full of vintage Chanel tweeds, and that's one of my favourite jackets, and yes, that's an old Louis Vuitton suit carrier. The other couple of pictures are, in fact, The Very Mummy G in the most AMAZING lilac Giambattista Valli dress (I think from SS2008), with huge yellow jewels around the neck and the bell sleeves. She didn't actually buy it in the end, although I did beg her to, and it was only about £300!!! She's a fool!
Anyway, if you're in Monte Carlo for a long weekend at all, definitely pay Le Dressing a visit. They are located at La Condamine 2, rue des Orangers. You won't want to leave it!!
