Oh my Christ, for someone who is obsessed with not only fashion, but all things 80s, I'm incredibly ashamed that I've only just discovered that Jean Paul Gaultier's spring summer 2013 collection was a massive nod back to the heady days of the New Romantics, androgyny, the perm, Pac-Man,
Dynasty, Commodore 64 computers, Walkmans, punk rock and E.T. - the highest-grossing film of the decade.
For that short 12 or 13 minute show on that sunny day in Paris in September, Jean Paul Gaultier took everyone back to the 80s to re-live and re-invent the styles of "all the pop stars of the Eighties who have influenced fashion". Grace Jones, Madonna, Boy George, Annie Lennox and Michael Jackson were some of the stars who were honoured in JPG's fashion flashback.
The clothes were luxurious, over the top, gorgeous, but what do you expect from Jean Paul - he of the cone bra and man-skirt - and the era to which he is revisiting?
The show notes stated "This show is based on facts. Any similarity with real events or characters is purely non-coincidental". I'm sure that just means "let's have some fun and give you all a masterclass on how to dress"?? for if you look closely, the collection is actually made up of elements that will continue to be relevant season after season - masculine lines, print mash ups, sheer, jumpsuits and boho-chic.
