Always on the hunt for new, fabulous menswear, I was more than delighted to be invited to a little preview of Alan Taylor's Autumn Winter 2013 offerings. The Irish born designer, who only graduated in 2010, has worked with the likes of Simone Rocha (helping her with three seasons), Agi & Sam and Alexander McQueen. So he's come from good stock. And if this collection is anything to go by, he's got a long, fantastic career ahead of him.So 'Special Relativity', the name of Taylor's AW13 collection, is all about the 4th dimension. I won't confuse anyone with trying to explain, but I did ask Alan himself who said:
"If we were four dimensional beings looking at a three dimensional object, we wouldn't see the two dimensional view that our eyes perceive in reality but rather we would see every single side of the object simultaneously. This came into my work through garments seemingly growing out of the back of other garments and changing the reality of the construction."
So what Taylor has created are seamless, uber interesting pieces, including jackets that grow naturally out the back of other jackets, trousers layered with flattened shorts and nets over tweeds. Colours including grey, crimson and navy blue.I also asked Alan who his customer is, to which he replied: "The Alan Taylor man would be one with so much confidence in himself but without being extrovert. He is very understated and has an obsession with design and detail."Are you that man? You should be!
