I must admit, Carey Mulligan usually passes me by when it comes to fashion. Just once I've sat up and properly noticed her, at the Met Gala in THAT gold and silver paillette covered Prada frock. I thought that might be the biggest risk she would ever take. But I was wrong.Last night (Thursday), Carey showed up on the red carpet of the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Ball in a Victoria Beckham tuxedo cape-suit from her autumn winter 2013 collection. And boy-oh-boy did I take notice of this one.But what did some blogger friends think? Here's what...

"I'm not sure if it's the way her arms are positioned or that she genuinely is uncomfortable in this cape, but she isn't oozing the same effortlessness as usual. I'm so used to seeing Mulligan in a dress that it's nice to see her in pants, but I'm not sure the jacket/cape is working. However I think those shoes are amazing."
"Oh Carey, let me count the ways. I loved Victoria Beckham's modern take on Le Smoking on the runway, and I love it on Ms Mulligan. Androgynous, edgy and super slick, I love the way the strong lines sit against Carey's delicate pixie look. True, she looks a little washed-out - a bit of blush and subtle lip colour wouldn't go amiss - but really, isn't it rather brilliant to see someone dressing like this on the red carpet? More, please!"

"Carey Mulligan is just not very Victoria Beckham. Prada - yes. Proenza Schouler - yes. Lanvin - hell yeah. But if this monstrous site is anything to behold, there should be an electric fence between her and VB. Her delicate frame is almost restrained in all that heavily structured black cape-jacket - and despite her arms being free she still somehow looks like she's in a straight jacket. The origami V-plunge doesn't work on her body shape and the trouser/shoe combo is office receptionist wear - not appropriate for a Tiffany gala. No no no."
***And moi...***
"I agree with.... EMILY. Big surprise there then, you all knew that was going to happen. Carey has a case of the Tildas (Swinton) here. She is TOTALLY working this Victoria Beckham cape creation. The white face and slicked back hair only add to the totally amazing shift away from her usually very feminine style of dress. A FABULOUS fashion triumph Carey. Not only showing her risk-taking is increasing, but also that Victoria can do Le Smoking oh-so-well!"
