Felicity Hayward's 7 ways to practice self love...

The first time I met Felicity, I just knew she was ‘one of my people’. You know when you recognise someone’s energy as your own? When you can’t escape their infectious personality? THAT. We laugh at the same things and give each other lots of advice, which is amazing seeing as we’ve only known each other for a short period of time.

But when you know someone is in your tribe, you just know. Have you seen her Ted Talk, all about the body positivity swindle? It’s pitch perfect. And do you follow her @self.love.brings.beauty Instagram account? It celebrates self loving yourself, and celebrating everyone’s bodies.

Talking of self love, I asked Felicity for her top 7 ways in practicing self love everyday, and the below points should become your new commandments. Try them, doesn’t have to all be at once, and you’re sure to feel amazing, productive and just a little bit better about the world we live in.

1. Self love is personal, I can write my top 7 things that make me feel good but they might not be relevant to you, always remember that. We were all born different with our own quirks and preferences so don’t be concerned if you only relate to even just one of my 7 tips, if any.

2. Take everyday at your own pace, there is no rush in your goals. You never want to hurry something because of the influence of other people’s journeys. It will flow when it is right.

3. Removing yourself from toxic behaviour and setting boundaries with people. This for me has taken some time, it isn’t easy. I’m a lover not a fighter and sometimes allow people in my life for too long, but once you see red flags 🚩 popping up on the regular it’s time to take some distance and protect your space.

4. I carry crystals with me wherever I go: to work, when I travel, on holiday. For me they are little pockets of energy that keep me feeling grounded. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re feeling intrigued by it, pop to your local crystal store and see which ones take your fancy by touch and sight. The astrology shop in Covent Garden and Physic Sisters in Selfridges are my favs in London.

5. Spend more time with your friends who really do adore you. Try to plan at least one night a week where you do something creative or fun together and turn off those phones. Being disconnected from the internet and remembering what it’s like to be human.

6. Pamper yourself. Now this to me is subjective. I love a spa, but understand that it’s a privilege to be able to run away to unwind. To some people a pamper night might simply be not cooking and getting a takeout, it might be watching a movie in the bath, sitting in the park and reading a book. I think when we use the word ‘pamper’ it really means escaping for a small amount of time doing something you love. Do that.

7. Try something new with a group of people you don’t know. I recently started pottery class and it was so refreshing to be in a room full of people who didn’t know each other from Adam and weren’t concerned about Instagram or social media, people of all ages and backgrounds simply just trying to learn a new skill. Making new friendships in the old tradition way free of judgement: more of this!
