Well,
To start off from where I left last time, I DID survive the straight bar in Brisbane - JUST! We just got drunk and dealt with it. Me and Lee took a deep breath before we entered, and it turned out to be actually quite fun! It only went sour when some pissed rugby player came up to me, Lee and our friend Stacey and showed us his tattooed and pierced scrotum - which, I mean, is lovely, but I really didn’t need to see it!
Anyway, as I said, the last one was only part one! So I told you about the Whitsundays which was lovely. After that we headed down to Harvey Bay to adventure onto Fraser Island. We were wound up on the boat about the camping and what not to do on Fraser, so we were thinking the worst. We were told we had to dig out toilets and what not- I nearly freaked!!!
The day before we went we met with out group, which on first impressions seemed all a bit geeky and not very fun, but we were proved wrong and they turned out to be completely the opposite. Me and Lee volunteered to do the shopping so we knew EXACTLY what we had - you never know what these foreigners would of bought! We all piled into the 4 wheeler and headed to the ferry. Lee drove most of the 2 days, I would of, but I was too busy getting banned in London to worry about driving on beaches!! I quickly made friends in the back of the jeep, I think I was more forced to than anything, there was 10 of us in the back of this thing! When we got off the ferry, it was time for some off-road driving - and believe me, after 2 days, I had DEFINATELY had enough! It was very funny, but at times it hurt quite a lot on the old posterior! Not to mention over the really bumpy parts (which were frequent) the back of the jeep was literally a mass of boobs and limbs being flung everywhere!!!
So we arrived at 'base camp' which really was a glorified name for some old desert where the tent stood and a couple of money-operated showers and toilets were erected! Before we arrived we had seen some of the island, which I may add has more sand on it than the Sahara Desert (I only know that because we were PUMPED with information from those really bad information videos with the 80's throwback man telling us not to piss on our own in case of Dingoes!). Once we got to base camp, it was time to put up the tent so obviously me and Lee decided to do the cooking! We had dinner, had some much needed drink - i tried to numb myself before going to sleep in the tent but it didn’t quite work- and got to know everyone. Me and Lee did the usual comedy routine so that everyone would actually start talking and we all soon became friends.
The tent was interesting to say the least! It slept 6, but was no bigger than an en suite bathroom, so I knew I was in for an amazing nights sleep!!!! Me and Lee made sure we got the good tent with the funny people in it to make it that much easier. We all got into our sleeping bags (as much as I hate them, they are a good indicator that I’ve put on weight - it was like getting toothpaste back into the tube!!) and then we all tried to sleep. I think it was about 2 hours into sleeping that I woke up panicky - i felt claustrophobic and had somehow become almost very intimate with the German girl next to me which was the indicator to move so I decided to sleep along side everyone’s heads which offered more room thank god! Suffice to say, I only had about 3 hours sleep the first night - tents and sleeping bags are just not a good look!
The second day we saw all the sights on the island which was lovely. They are some amazing fresh water lakes that are crystal clear and sand dunes miles high and long. There is also a quite amazing ship wreck that has been there for years. The second nights sleep was quite similar to the first, although I think I managed another couple of hours. However in the middle of the night, the German girl was obviously dreaming of something and actually grabbed my wrist to which I screamed 'What! What!' coz I thought it was Lee. I swear, what with the Germans on the boat, I’ve come to the conclusion they are all quite mad! We made all our own meals, but I’ve literally never had so much bread - I was practically a loaf by the 3rd day! The people turned out to be lovely and we had a laugh. The last day we saw the rest of the island, by this time we were all desperate for some flat roads! And then headed back to them after lunch.
We were all staying in the same hostel after, so it was nice to see everyone clean and in normal surroundings! The day after we headed south to Brisbane with 2 of the lovely (but mad) German girls. Brisbane was nice, we stayed there for just over a week coz of the people we met on the Whitsundays. Stacey actually managed the Palace Hostel so we stayed there for next to nothing which was lovely of her. It was sooooo nice to be in a city after the boat and that island! And it was sooo nice to see all the people we met on the boat. And it was also really good to get to some gay bars - the first in a long time! They weren’t amazing, but they were fine for a few nights! We quickly met some regulars and had a laugh with them. A couple of days into our stay in Brisbane, my friend Louise joined us which was lovely. Just so refreshing to see a friendly face. She has come to Byron with us, which is where we are at the mo, but ya’ll have to wait for that email, cant be arsed to type anymore!
I will just say that I have never read so many books, which is something coming from someone with an English degree! It has stooped that low that I read a book called 'At home with the Queen' (as in the monarch, not some poof in heels!) coz it was the only one that caught my eye! I finished reading one the other day, it was a true story, about a gay couple who eventually find out they had HIV. Its all very sad, in fact I haven’t cried that much since Sex and the City finished!!!!
Lots of love
