Being an avid fan of Mr Boy George myself, you won't find a bad word said against him on this blog. The singer, song writer, artist, author the list goes on... has been back in the press this week for announcing the (final) end to his drug abuse days. He commented that "I've been strung out on drugs for the past five years. But this time I'm clean for good. I don't want to die" he continues by adding that "I haven't really told anyone this but I've spent five years in this chemical cloud. Getting clean at the end of 2007 was a very big thing."
After rising to fame in the 80's, developing an up to £400-a-day drug habit, crumbling under the media spot light, seeing friends die from drugs, starting a record label (More Protein - named so because George says at the time "I was living off a diet of tofu and sperm, and it seemed appropriate") and a clothes range (B Rude, some pics below), writing 2 autobiographies, becoming an internationally acclaimed DJ, writing and staring in a West End and Broadway show (Taboo) and dabbling in many other projects, Mr O'Dowd hasn't done too badly. Of course there was the community service stint in NYC, but George resents any comments that it was a bad experience. In an interview with Q magazine he says that "People on the street were great to me... I got so much love. I ask myself, 'What do I have to do before they give up on me?' I'm so lucky."
With another UK tour pending and a soon to be announced USA tour (once he is granted a visa), he is now "more focused than ever before " on his music. His solo stuff to date is, I think, his best work and his first autobiography ('Take it Like a Man') is probably the best I've ever read.
It looks like after travelling through the darkest tunnel possible for a star, he is now seeing the light and hopefully coming out shining!
