I'm on the fence with Maggie Gyllenhaal: as an actress and as a fashionista. You know when you're just not sure? Yeah, that's how I feel about Mags. Now her brother, that's a different matter. Hot doesn't even cover it. But we're not discussing Jake - although maybe next week, if he's worn something worth talking about....Anyway, in terms of red carpet looks, I firmly believe this is a big move away from Maggie's normal, slightly bland outfits. It's a statement dress. From Christian Dior's autumn winter 2013 collection, this dress accompanied Maggie down the red carpet of the New York premiere of 'White House Down' on Tuesday evening.Anyway, here's what some blogger friends thought of Maggie's look...
***Jane from The Women's Room Blog***
Usually I love Maggie's cute girl next door style. She totally rocks a pixie short hair cut and looks amazing when she keeps things chic and simple in a LBD. Maybe this is an attempt for us to sit up and take notice, but honestly - a crocheted peplum - there is NO excuse for this! It's wrong on every level, never mind the fact that temperatures in NYC are around 30 degrees! #shootthestylist I say
***Gurd from Style Cupid Blog***
It's always a shame when the worst of the best collections happen to the best of the best actresses. It just doesn't suit her. The top half is too low - it has a slightly "Towie star about to flash a nipple" feel to it. The pencil skirt hugs her wonderfully but that quite frankly stupid ruffle in the middle fusses up the whole thing. Someone put this woman in some Lanvin for God's sake!
***Danielle from Fashionista Barbie***
There is something about this strapless knitted Dior dress that I like. I'm not sure whether it is the contrast of the monochrome patterns on the bodice and the skirt, the ruffle peplum, or the fact that it is nice to see Maggie making a statement on the red carpet. For me I like it, I don’t love it. I think it could have done with being a little shorter in length, but what I do love though is her hair and make-up, her bold pink lippy is stunning.
***and moi...***
I agree with Danielle about the length, it needs to be a bit shorter, and I agree with Gurd that it does look a bit too low on the bust, but come on, THIS IS CHRISTIAN DIOR, and it looks bloody amazing. Even Dior's ready-to-wear looks couture, and this is prime example. I love monochrome and I love a big peplum. Is it too fussy? Maybe. Is it a different look for Maggie? Definitely. Do I like it? ABSOLUTELY. It shows her shape, and it's interesting. Those things make it a good dress.
