Mary J. Blige, Pamela Anderson, Fergie, Boy George, Nicki Minaj. They all have MAC Viva Glam in common. But it was RuPaul, the queen bee, that started it all with the first ever campaign back in 1994.Now, 19 years on, Ru is back, and so is his Viva Glam campaign! Remember those iconic shots of him in thigh high red boots, spelling out the letters? Yeah, they're back!In an interview about the return of his Viva Glam campaign, Ru spoke of the challenging poses he was asked to do:
It was interesting because I had to put my body in all these weird positions for an extended period of time. I had a kink in my back and all these muscles were aching that I didn’t even know existed. I’d shoot several different set-ups to make up the letters, a day like that is probably 12 hours. The boots were the fun part.
And he said this about his return to the MAC family...
It feels like I’ve never really left. Especially when I started with MAC years and years ago, it was just the two Franks from Toronto. It felt very much like a family, a small operation. Of course, MAC grew and grew but it still feels like a family. The Viva Glam campaign I did was so iconic—it was the first ever! I still see it on Tumblr all of the time. People will post the picture on their Tumblr accounts and it really hasn’t gone away. I think it’s really appropriate all of these years later to come back in an official way and finally with the accompanying Lipglass.
Unbelievably, the MAC Viva Glam campaign in its entirety has so far raised over $270million for women, men and children affected by HIV and AIDS, and with the full RRP going to the charity, it's an amazing cause! So look out this month for Rupaul's Viva Glam 1 Lipstick and Lipglass in Brownish Blue-Red (£15 and £14 respectively)And thanks to my friend BritishBeautyBlogger for alerting me to the comeback of Ru and the image at the top.
