OK OK OK, so I did post something on Instagram from the Dries Van Noten SS16 show, gushing to the max, but really I wanted to put up every single picture.Hell, I wanted to start a whole new Instagram account, probably called something like: 'I CAN'T BREATH, DRIES', dedicated purely to this collection.It completely blew my mind. And judging by the reaction from editors and bloggers, it was a HUGE success for the House.Anyway, here are my top styling nuggets from the show:
* Go maximalist, or go home! *
Print on print on print is the key. The more the merrier. BUT notice how everything is strangely in unison. Don't just do it haphazard, make it work, and clash the colours correctly. Lots of blues, greens, mustards and metallics. Oh, and keep the prints BIG and oversized for maximum impact.
* Arm stockings are the new tights *
It's like new rave mixed with high fashion. And the effect is brilliant! There's no guarantee that Dries will actually produce these to buy, they might just be a catwalk thing, but I pray they are manufactured. They add another dimension of print to an outfit, and are a great alternative to gloves.
* What ever you do, get a bright pink bralet *
It's probably not something on your radar, but a fuchsia bralet - reminiscent of Madonna - is a must for SS16. If for nothing else, but to use as a layering tool. Dries put one over a body, and under a sheer shirt, in a clashing print, obviously. The look is effective, and very 'festival ready'. (Side note: they were also seen in black and white, if pink isn't your colour.)
* Manly, boxy shapes are IN *
But the thing is with Dries, as in every collection, it's mixed with hyper feminine contrasts. Oversized check blazer with a spray of tulle coming out the bottom, or jackets with that chic too-big-fit look and extra long sleeves in mesmerising designs. Also, and very clear from other designer collections for SS16, YOU MUST HAVE A GOOD PAIR OF TROUSERS. Bringing home the masculine/feminine vibes.
*Embrace the '70s footwear (and keep it open toed)*
It is, after all, spring summer we are talking about, so open-toed footwear is VERY appropriate - welcome in fact. For Dries, it's all about carrying on that flock design, or just bold, bright colours. And this iconic '70s block heels shape is a must! Plus, it's time to embrace the ankle strap, ladies....
* Pockets are a BIG yes *
It's nothing new, but it's a mini trend, if you can call it that. We saw it at Givenchy, even Chanel. Be sure to get something with pockets: a skirt, a pair of trousers, boxy jacket or jumpsuit. Whatever it is, inject some of Dries' nonchalant charm by shoving your hands in your pockets!
